The roots of Freemasonry can be traced back to the guilds of stone masons who built the medieval castles and cathedrals. These guilds eventually transformed into fraternal organizations known as Lodges. The first formal organization of such Lodges was created when the Grand Lodge of England was formed in 1717. Freemasonry spread to North America and elsewhere around the world, leading to the creation of new Lodges, some with Military origin and the formation of new Grand Lodges.
